Computer running slow? Start with these checks

A practical first-pass checklist for sluggish PCs before deeper troubleshooting.

This article provides general information. The right troubleshooting steps can vary by device, configuration and situation. Back up important data before making significant system changes.

Check the basics

Restart the computer if it has been running for a long time, close applications you are not using, and confirm that the main drive still has free space.

Look for heavy resource use

Task Manager can help identify an application using unusually high CPU, memory or disk resources. Avoid ending unfamiliar system processes just because they appear busy.

Review startup apps

Too many applications launching automatically can make startup and everyday use feel slower. Disable only software you recognize and do not need at sign-in.

When to get help

Persistent freezing, unusual noises, repeated crashes or severe slowdowns can point to hardware, storage, software or security issues that need closer diagnosis.
