Home network basics: router, modem and Wi-Fi explained
Understand the pieces of a typical home network and where connection problems can start.

Modem
The modem or gateway connects your location to the internet service provider. Some devices combine modem and router functions.
Router
The router manages the local network and usually provides Wi-Fi. It connects your phones, computers, printers and other devices.
Wi-Fi
Wi-Fi is the wireless connection between your device and the router; it is not the same thing as the internet service itself.
Troubleshooting direction
If Wi-Fi is connected but the internet is unavailable on every device, the issue may be upstream of an individual computer. If only one device fails, start with that device.
