Printer says “offline”? Try these steps

Simple ways to reconnect a printer and rule out the most common causes.

This article provides general information. The right troubleshooting steps can vary by device, configuration and situation. Back up important data before making significant system changes.

Check power and connection

Confirm the printer is awake, has no obvious error on its display, and is connected by the expected USB, Ethernet or Wi-Fi method.

Confirm the selected printer

Windows can sometimes send a job to an old or duplicate printer entry. Verify that the correct device is selected.

Clear stuck jobs

A stalled print job can hold up the queue. Cancel old jobs, then restart the printer and computer if necessary.

Reconnecting a network printer

If the printer changed networks or the router was replaced, it may need to be joined to Wi-Fi again before computers can find it.
