Suspicious pop-ups and browser warnings: what to do

Safer first steps when a browser or computer suddenly shows alarming messages.

This article provides general information. The right troubleshooting steps can vary by device, configuration and situation. Back up important data before making significant system changes.

Do not call numbers in pop-ups

Unexpected browser warnings that demand an immediate phone call or payment can be deceptive. Close the page rather than using contact information shown in the warning.

Do not grant remote access

Only allow remote-control software when you intentionally contacted a support provider you trust and understand what access is being requested.

Run trusted security checks

Use built-in or reputable security software that is already installed or obtained from its official source. Avoid downloading a “cleaner” from the warning itself.

Protect important accounts

If you entered a password or payment information into a suspicious page, change affected credentials from a trusted device and contact the relevant financial provider when appropriate.
